A core strategy for YouthNet to achieve its mission and vision is to offer professional development opportunities for youth workers in Kansas City. Youth workers who are interested have two tracks from which to choose their professional development opportunities. These two tracks are not exclusive of each other and can be taken together depending upon a youth worker's needs and specific situation.
Education - in conjunction with the Metropolitan Community Colleges, YouthNet offers two different certificates and a scholarship for youth workers which can lead to an Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Human Services.
The Youth Development Worker Certificate is a 12 college credit hour certificate awarded by the Human Services department of the Metropolitan Community Colleges. For more information about the Youth Development Worker Certificate click on page 3 of the YouthNet brochure.
The Youth Work Certificate is a 33 college credit hour certificate awarded by the Metropolitan Community Colleges which builds upon the 12 credit hour certificate and incorporates an additional 21 credit hours of general education classes. The YouthNet Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, books and fees for both certificates so any youth worker and/or prospective youth worker can have the opportunity to take the credit hour classes. For more information about YouthNet's scholarship click here.
Training - as a result of a several focus groups with a myriad of youth workers in a variety of community-based agencies, YouthNet has developed a series of ongoing youth development trainings that promote the positive development of adolescents.
An Agency Assessment is conducted with any agency that calls YouthNet about the possibility of doing training for their youth workers or supervisors. The agency assessment is an organizational assessment that helps to place youth development within the context of the entire organization.
Our Youth Development Training is listed by topic area and can be configured in an assortment of ways that best suits the agency, its personnel and the agency assessment. For the list of youth development training topics click on pages 4, 5 and 6 of the YouthNet brochure.
Our Standards Training is a new process that helps agencies identify their area of need as it relates to school age care standards and teen standards. After identification, YouthNet will customize training to assist agencies in meeting standards.
